3 Days in Dubai: A First-Timer's Itinerary

Short answer: Day 1 covers the Marina and JBR at your own pace, Day 2 is Downtown Dubai and the big-ticket attractions, Day 3 splits between Old Dubai in the morning and a desert safari in the evening. Three days is enough to cover Dubai's highlights without feeling rushed, especially staying somewhere central like Dubai Marina.

Day 1: Settle In, Marina and JBR
Three days moves fast, so day one is deliberately light. Use it to adjust, especially if you've just landed after a long flight, and stay close to home base.
Morning: Sleep in if you need to. Walk the Marina promenade, get a feel for the neighborhood, and grab breakfast at one of the cafes along the water.
Afternoon: Head to JBR Beach, a short walk from most Marina accommodation. Swim, or just walk The Walk promenade and browse The Beach mall. If it's hot, retreat into Dubai Marina Mall for the air conditioning and a browse.
Evening: Dinner at Pier 7 or one of the mid-range restaurants along Marina Walk. If your dates line up, book a dhow dinner cruise for the evening instead, a two-hour buffet dinner on the water watching the towers light up, departing right from the Marina.
Transport: None needed beyond walking and the tram, if you use it at all.
Day 2: Downtown Dubai, the Big Three
This is the heaviest day, covering Burj Khalifa, Museum of the Future, and Dubai Mall, all within easy reach of each other.
Morning: Take the metro (Red Line) from a Marina-area station to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station, about 25-30 minutes. Book Burj Khalifa tickets online in advance for either a mid-morning slot (fewer crowds) or save it for late afternoon to catch sunset from the top; both work, pick based on whether you want cooler morning light or the golden-hour view.
Midday: Museum of the Future is a five-minute walk from the Burj Khalifa area. Budget two to three hours here.
Afternoon: Dubai Mall, right next door. See the aquarium (paid entry, or view the wall for free), browse Fashion Avenue, and take a break from the heat, since you'll be doing a lot of walking today.
Evening: Catch the Dubai Fountain show outside the mall, timed every 30 minutes after sunset. Dinner at one of the many restaurants with a lake view, then metro back to the Marina.
Transport: Metro both ways, roughly AED 5-7.50 each direction with a Nol card.
Day 3: Old Dubai in the Morning, Desert in the Evening
A day of contrast: the oldest part of the city before lunch, the open desert after dark.
Morning: Metro to Al Fahidi or Creek metro station. Walk the Al Fahidi Historic District, wind-tower architecture and narrow lanes that look nothing like the rest of the city. Cross Dubai Creek on a traditional Abra boat for a few dirhams, a slow, scenic ride through Old Dubai.
Midday: Lunch in Deira or Bur Dubai, where street food runs AED 10-30 for a full meal, some of the best value eating in the city.
Afternoon: Head back to the Marina to rest before the evening, since a desert safari usually runs 4-5 hours and starts with pickup from your accommodation.
Evening: Desert safari with dune bashing, a camel ride, sandboarding, and a BBQ dinner under the stars. Most tours pick up directly from Marina-area accommodation in the late afternoon and return around 9-10 PM.
Transport: Metro and Abra for the morning (a few dirhams total), safari transport included in the tour price.
If You Have a Fourth Day
Consider Atlantis Aquaventure for a full day of water slides, a trip to Global Village if you're visiting between November and April, or simply a slower day back at the Marina and JBR before you fly out. Three days covers the highlights; a fourth day is where Dubai stops feeling like a checklist and starts feeling like a place you're actually spending time in.
Rough Budget for 3 Days (Activities and Food Only)
Burj Khalifa: AED 179
Museum of the Future: AED 159
Dubai Aquarium: AED 175 (optional, skip to save AED 175)
Desert safari with dinner: AED 250
Meals across 3 days: roughly AED 300-450
Metro and local transport: under AED 14/day
Total: roughly AED 1,100-1,250 per person (~$300-340), not including flights or accommodation.
